Buying from native nurseries is a practice in delayed gratification. This week’s plants arrived from Prairie Nursery that were purchased in late July. Sadly, I was sick for a few days after they arrived but felt better today. I also knew that the big rain storm we had the night before would make it easier to pull the weeds that were winning the fight over the space.
Before creating this corner garden, I didn’t have much experience (well really at all) with volunteer plants. It was surprising some months back to find first a thriving basil plant, then common nightshade, then evening primrose. Because of my mobility issues, I haven’t been able to weed as much as I expected so every time I came back to the garden, it was pretty overrun.
Like Back to School each year, my garden is getting a fresh fall start. Gone are my volunteer plants and the crabgrass that also took over. Time to plant our new plants. I think I’m going to make a rule that I’m only allowed to plant under the supervision of others. I spend hours plotting out exactly where I want each plant to go, intending to mark out a grid with twine to help me do so. Then, I get finished with weeding, feel myself flagging and say to myself “right here is fine”.
I did have some energy left to use the twine to tie together the twigs I’ve laid as a border. Every time I walk past they seemed to have been scattered. I wonder if its unseeing pedestrians or excited pups.
Last but not least, I crumbled the dried anise hyssop seed heads throughout to see what if anything comes up next year. That’s it until a handful of other plants show up this week from Prairie Moon.
